Living in North Fulton

About 90% of the great city of Atlanta lies within the boundaries of Fulton County(the other 10% lies within DeKalb County). With almost 1,000,000 residents, Fulton is also the largest county in Georgia. It was created in 1853 from the western half of the formerly huge DeKalb County, assuming a rather thin, elongated shape. Fulton stretches 70 miles, from the City of Johns Creek on the northern edge, to Chattahoochee Hills at the southern extreme. It was named in honor of inventor Robert Fulton, who built the world's first steamboat in 1807.

The City of Atlanta sits right in the middle, separating Fulton into 2 sections, South Fulton and North Fulton. Geographically remote from each other, the northern and southern sections of the county have grown increasingly at odds over the collection of taxes and distribution of services. Each section of Fulton has even developed its own chamber of commerce to meet the differing needs of the northern and southern areas.
