A mere 90 miles north of Atlanta's big-city pace of life is the beautiful, picturesque - and small - city of Blue Ridge. As one can imagine, it lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While less than 1,300 souls make Blue Ridge their year-round home, this mountain resort and getaway destination teems with visitors. Tourists and homebuyers seeking a mountain-home escape will find themselves enthralled by Blue Ridge.
The City is the county seat of Fannin County, having been founded in 1886, as a result of the arrival of the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad. Because of the railroad, Blue Ridge developed as a center of business and in 1895 the county seat was moved from Morganton to Blue Ridge.
Blue Ridge is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Georgia. With key water features, such as Lake Blue Ridge and the Toccoa River, as well as being surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the southern tip of the Appalachian Trail, the area draws tourists and outdoorsmen from all over the United States and abroad.
Outdoor activities include fishing, kayaking, boating, tubing, swimming, hiking, camping and blueberry picking, to name a few. The downtown area of the city is populated with several shops and antique stores. The tracks for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway bisect the downtown, with the Scenic Railway itself operating out of the town's historic 100-year old Depot. The downtown area also serves as host for several seasonal festivals.
The town of Blue Ridge was once considered an elite health resort because of its pure mineral waters. Tourists would ride the train to town, eat dinner at the Blue Ridge Hotel, and take a leisurely walk to the mineral springs after dinner. Today, tourists can still ride the train and take a leisurely walk along Main Street, enjoying the antique and specialty shops, galleries, restaurants and small town atmosphere of Blue Ridge.
