The small city of Auburn Georgia is located partly in Gwinnett County, but mostly in Barrow County, 42 miles to the northeast of Atlanta. It takes a little less than an hour to reach Auburn from downtown Atlanta. Approximately 7,000 residents call this charming little northern Georgia community home.
Established in 1892, Auburn was once a transportation hub on the railroad to connected Atlanta with Athens. For generations, red clay has been an icon associated with rural life in the south, and it is the source of this City's name. The clay from the area of Auburn was dug and used in the manufacture of auburn-red dye for the textile industry.
Auburn is a small community in serene setting. residents and visitors enjoy its four lovely parks and athletic fields, as well as its city-wide landscaping and beautification, exemplified by deep red Crepe Myrtles lining the streets.
City leaders expect the population to triple over the next decade and a half. In anticipation of expected newcomers, Auburn is developing plans for a big future. Capitalizing on the expansion of Atlanta, and its own steady growth, a Downtown Development Authority has undertaken comprehensive planning. Renovation has begun in the downtown district. Expanded park facilities will include a new sports complex, as well as the Auburn Community Garden and greenhouses. In collaboration with Barrow and Gwinnett Counties and four neighboring communities, Auburn is committed to "The Great Rail trail", a 22-mile bicycle route built on an old railroad bed.
Newcomers will also be able to choose living in the forthcoming Auburn Station, a planned suburban village. Residents, workers and visitors in the new Auburn Station will enjoy restaurants, shopping, walking trails and apartment life.
